If you already have an Internet account, installing America Online 3.0 will change your TCP settings (in your TCP/IP control panel or MacTCP control panel)!
You may wish to back up your corresponding Preferences file (in the System folder, in the Preferences folder) before installing America Online.
There are three installer files on this disk:
*Install AOL 3.0 (PPC)
*Install AOL 3.0 Preview (68K)
*Install AOL 2.7 (68K)
It is important that you read all of the following information to determine which installer file you should use to install America Online on your Macintosh.
System Requirements for AOL version 3.0 for Macintosh:
* 68030 CPU (68040 or better recommended)
* 640x400 Resolution, 256 Colors or shades of gray
* System 7.1.0 (System 7.5.3 Revision 2 or later recommended)
* 8 MB Physical RAM (16 strongly recommended)
* 15 MB Free Space on Hard Drive
* 9600 bps modem (14.4 or 28.8 kbps modem strongly recommended, direct TCP/IP is supported)
If you have less than 16 MB of Physical RAM, you must turn on Virtual Memory (see instructions below) or use RAMDoubler.
To turn on Virtual Memory:
1. On the Apple menu, select Control Panels.
2. In the Control Panels window, double click the Memory control panel.
3. In the Virtual Memory section, click On.
4. Close the Memory control panel.
5. Restart your Macintosh for the change to take effect.
If you turn on Virtual Memory, check the free space on your Hard Drive to ensure that you still have 15 MB of free space on your Hard Drive.
If you have a Power Macintosh that meets these requirements, use the Install the AOL 3.0 (PPC) installer file.
Note: The general rule for determining if you have a Power Mac is that the model numbers for Power Macs are 4 digits (for example, the Power Book 5300 or the Performa 6000 series) and the model numbers for non-Power Macs are 3 digits (for example the Quadra 600 series).
If you have a non-Power Macintosh (a Macintosh with a 68030 or 68040 processor: "68K") that meets the above systems requirements, use the Install AOL 3.0 Preview (68K) installer file, subject to the following notice:
Note: Apple has identified a bug with the "CFM-68K Runtime Enabler" extension which can cause random crashes and potential loss of data, and therefore recommends that customers disable this extension on non-Power Macintoshes only. Since AOL 3.0 relies on this extension, it will not run if you disable the "CFM-68K Runtime Enabler" extension. If you choose to disable the extension, you will need to return to using AOL 2.7 until the problem is fixed. You should be aware of the risks if you choose to not follow Apple's recommendation to disable the extension. For more information, see the Apple announcement on the web at http://www.macos.apple.com/macos/cfm-68k.html.
Because of this bug, Apple has blocked the loading of the CFM68K Enabler in the latest version of the MacOS (System 7.6), and AOL 3.0 cannot be installed. The message "Application could not load because CFM68K Enabler could not be found" will appear when version 3.0 is installed on a 68K Mac running System 7.6. At this time, there is no work around. If you want to use Mac 3.0 on a 68K machine, you must use System 7.5.5 or earlier until Apple releases a fix for the CFM68K Enabler. When Apple releases this fix, we will release the final 3.0 version for non-Power Macintosh users. This does not affect Power Macintosh users.
Update: As of mid-March, Apple has finally fixed the CFM problem! Once you're on America Online, visit keyword: UPDATE to see if the America Online 3.0 for 68k Macs is ready for you to download. (This applies only to non-Power Macs.)
If your Macintosh does not meet at least the minimum requirements above (or if you are using a 68K Mac running System 7.6), use the Install AOL 2.7 (68K) installer file to install the older version 2.7.
